Searching the online catalogue

In the collection of over 805,000 media units (books, magazines, newspapers etc.) from all scientific subject areas, there are 136,000 units published before 1900, including e.g. essential ancient scripts from the late middle ages like the fragment of the Rolandslied or the Mecklenburgische Reimchronik. Additionally there are over 2,400 printed and electronically available newspapers and magazines from all scientific areas as well as a broad availability of licensed databases.

The online catalogue is comprised of two functionalities: It offers the possibility to research the entire printed and physically available inventory of the state library as well as providing additional literary references. As of February 2024 there are 454,693 entries from the state bibliography available via the catalogue.

The online catalogue offers the basic ‘search’ setting as well as the more detailed ‘advanced search’ setting. Generally a combined search delivers a more detailed result list. If you are researching book titles, essays, newspapers or literature concerning Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the setting ‘all words’ is most useful. The number of results can be further narrowed down using the Boolean operators (e.g. and / or). The setting ‘advanced search’ offers the possibility to connect multiple search words and provides tools to search for specific years of publication or types of material.

The collection is divided into two different locations. Firstly there is the open access area and secondly the closed stacks. In the open access area you can find contemporary literature sorted according to their scientific subject areas as well as reference books and manuals. If you would like publications from the closed stacks you can order and borrow them using the online catalogue.

For more complex search inquires or special request our subject librarians will offer support and assistance. This service can be obtained for a fee.

Media units that are not part of our collection can be ordered for a fee via an interlibrary loan from both German and international libraries.

If you have additional questions concerning the research of literature or how to order media units please feel free to reach out to our colleagues at the information desk.
